Ghana Health Ministry Debunks False Ebola Outbreak Claims

The Ministry of Health (MoH) has dismissed as false and misleading reports circulating on social media alleging that Ghana has recorded 2,300 Ebola cases and 930 related deaths.

In a press release issued by the Ministry’s Public Relations Unit, health authorities stated unequivocally that Ghana has not recorded any case of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD). The Ministry described the figures being circulated, reportedly originating from a publication by South African broadcaster SABC, as inaccurate and urged the public to disregard them.

According to the Ministry, the misinformation has the potential to create unnecessary fear and panic among Ghanaians and citizens across Africa. It emphasized that the country remains free of Ebola and that there is no outbreak within its borders.

The statement also highlighted that the Minister for Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, recently toured Ghana’s points of entry, laboratories, and treatment facilities as part of routine preparedness measures. The visits were intended to strengthen the country’s capacity to prevent, detect, and respond promptly to any potential public health emergency.

The Ministry clarified that these preparedness activities are precautionary and should not be interpreted as an indication of an Ebola outbreak in Ghana. It stressed that such measures are part of Ghana’s ongoing efforts to maintain a strong public health surveillance and emergency response system.

Health authorities further appealed to the public to seek information only from official sources, including the Ministry of Health and the Ghana Health Service. They also urged citizens to refrain from sharing unverified reports on social media, warning that the spread of false information can undermine public confidence and hinder effective public health communication.
