Delays in Operationalising Weija Paediatric Hospital Raise Public Health Concerns

The recent demonstration by residents and community members at the Weija Paediatric Hospital has once again brought national attention to the urgent need to operationalise the facility and strengthen specialised child healthcare delivery in Ghana.

For months, residents of Weija, health advocates, and members of the general public have consistently called on authorities to ensure the opening of the hospital to help address the growing pressure on existing health facilities, particularly those providing paediatric care within the Greater Accra Region. The latest protest reflects increasing frustration over continued delays in making the facility accessible to children and families who urgently need specialised healthcare services.

According to a press release issued by the Ministry of Health on May 5, 2026, the Weija Paediatric Hospital is a World Bank-funded project that commenced in 2023 and was expected to be completed by December 2025. The Ministry, however, disclosed that the project encountered significant setbacks after the World Bank reportedly raised concerns over procurement irregularities, including allegations of inflated medical equipment costs.

The Ministry further indicated that although efforts had been made to commission the facility for public use, unresolved financial and contractual issues between stakeholders have delayed access to the hospital.

At Turning Point Foundation, we recognise the importance of accountability, transparency, and due process in the management of public health infrastructure projects. However, we also acknowledge the serious implications that prolonged delays in operationalising critical healthcare facilities can have on vulnerable populations, especially children.

Access to specialised paediatric healthcare remains a major challenge for many families in Ghana. Existing referral hospitals continue to face increasing patient congestion, limited resources, and pressure on healthcare workers. The establishment and operationalisation of facilities such as the Weija Paediatric Hospital are therefore essential to improving healthcare access, reducing delays in treatment, and strengthening child health outcomes.

The concerns being raised by community members highlight the growing public expectation for timely completion and effective utilisation of healthcare infrastructure projects funded with public and international support. Healthcare facilities are not merely buildings; they represent hope, protection, and access to life-saving services for communities.

Turning Point Foundation calls on all relevant stakeholders to work collaboratively and urgently toward resolving all outstanding issues to ensure the full operationalisation of the Weija Paediatric Hospital in the interest of public health. We further encourage transparency throughout the resolution process to maintain public confidence and accountability.

We also commend community members for peacefully advocating for improved healthcare access and for drawing attention to the importance of investing in child health services in Ghana.

Every child deserves timely access to quality healthcare. The operationalisation of the Weija Paediatric Hospital is not only a development issue but a public health necessity.
