NHIA Removes One-Month Waiting Period to Boost Access to Healthcare

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has introduced a significant relief package for the public by removing the standard one-month waiting period for specific enrollments and renewals. The waiver takes effect throughout November and runs until December 14, 2025. It forms part of a broader effort to improve access to healthcare and increase active participation in the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) under the “NHIS Active Month Campaign”.

The waiting period has often been a barrier for people who want to join or return to the Scheme, especially those who need immediate healthcare services. By suspending it temporarily, the NHIA hopes to encourage more people to stay active and protected.

Who Benefits from the Waiver?

The waiver targets two main groups:

  • Individuals enrolling in the NHIS for the first time.

  • Former members renewing their NHIS cards after more than three months of expiry.

Eligible people who enroll or renew during the campaign period will gain instant access to healthcare services under the Scheme. In practical terms, nobody meeting the requirement will have to wait before benefiting from their membership.

According to the NHIA, the motivation behind this initiative is simple: every resident in Ghana deserves uninterrupted access to quality healthcare, and membership status should not stand in the way.

How to Enroll or Renew

The Authority has encouraged the public to take advantage of both in-person and digital options available across the country. Members can renew or sign up through:

  • Any NHIS District Office

  • The MyNHIS mobile app

  • The *929# NHIS Mobile Renewal short code

The NHIA is also encouraging subscribers to activate the Auto-Renewal feature, which ensures their membership remains valid without interruption.

With the waiver already in effect, the NHIA is urging especially those whose cards expired more than three months ago to renew as soon as possible. The Authority believes this temporary measure will not only ease access to healthcare for individuals and families, but also strengthen the Scheme by expanding the number of active cardholders.

The campaign underscores a central message: healthcare should be within reach for everyone. By waiving the waiting period, the NHIA is opening a window of opportunity to keep more people protected and ensure no one is left behind.
