The Health Facilities Regulatory Agency (HeFRA) has shut down 17 unlicensed health facilities operating in the Greater Accra Region for various infractions.
The exercise being undertaken within the region, according to the Agency will be extended to other regions in the country to ensure the system is sanitized of quackery. It is a nationwide campaign to ensure the safety of the general public in accessing quality healthcare during their vulnerable moments.
These are facilities either operating without license or have defaulted in renewing their licenses for years. With assistance from the police, officials from HeFRA were able to enforce its mandate. It was not a pleasant moment as managers of some of the facilities tried to resist the action as patients seek their services.
The exercise forms part of the Agency’s commitment to ensure the system is sanitized, cautioning all unlicensed health facilities to do the needful or risk a shut down.
Established under Part One of the Health Institutions and Facilities Act, 2011 (Act 829), HeFRA is mandated to register, inspect, license and monitor all health facilities and determine the minimum and basic equipment and personnel required for practice and service delivery to ensure better health outcomes.
