Health workers union launches fund app

The Health Services Workers Union (HSWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) has unveiled a digital application to mobilise funds to support its members in need.

The initiative, according to the National Chairman of the Union, Dr. Emmanuel Llyod Baffoe, represented a bold step toward strengthening solidarity, promoting welfare and securing the future of its members across the sector in the country.

He, therefore, called on all members, branch leaders, regional executives and all stakeholders to wholeheartedly embrace the initiative.

“Let us contribute faithfully, let us supervise diligently, let us protect it jealously and let us grow it responsibly,” he added, saying opportunities for growth required financial backing while unexpected hardships demanded timely intervention.

He said, “It is in response to these needs that the HSWU fund has been conceived.”

Touching on the three core pillars on which the fund was built, Dr Baffoe said, welfare support would provide structured financial assistance to members in times of distress, illness, bereavement or emergency.

He also mentioned the empowerment and development pillar, which he said was to support capacity building, education, professional advancement initiatives and sustainability and solidarity.

Collaborative management

That, Dr Baffoe said, was also to create a self-sustaining financial mechanism that strengthens the collective bargaining power and long-term stability.

“Colleagues, this initiative reflects our commitment to moving from reactive support to proactive empowerment.

It is about creating an institutional safety net — one that demonstrates that the union is not only a voice at the negotiating table but also a dependable partner in the everyday lives of its members,” he added.

He said the union executives were mindful that transparency, accountability and prudent governance would determine the success of the fund and assured members of robust governance structures, clear operational guidelines and strict financial oversight mechanisms, which he said would be instituted to safeguard every contribution made.

Dr. Baffoe said the fund was not merely a financial pool but rather a symbol of unity.

The Secretary-General of the TUC, Joshua Ansah, in a brief remark, commended the leadership of the HSWU for embracing digitalisation.

He expressed delight with the app and the fund, saying they would enhance transparency, accountability and information sharing.
