Greater Accra Regional Hospital Hosts Open Day to Deepen Community Engagement and Highlight Healthcare Excellence

The Greater Accra Regional Hospital last Thursday welcomed the general public to an Open Day designed to create stronger community engagement, encourage collaboration, and showcase the hospital’s full range of specialist services. Chiefs, schoolchildren and staff across departments participated in the event.

Throughout the day, teams from key units — including Pharmaceutical Services, Dietetics, Radiological Services and the Dialysis Centre — mounted exhibitions to demonstrate their work and educate visitors on medical procedures and patient care. Corporate partners such as Pharmanova Pharmaceuticals, Accra Medical Center, Top Up Pharmacy, Hills Pharmaceuticals, African Delight, Twellum Industrial Company, Unilever, Floke Pharmaceuticals and Abi’s Food Lab also supported the initiative. This year’s event was held under the theme “Promoting healthy living through partnership and quality care.”

Commitment to Excellence and a Call for Support

Opening the programme, the Medical Director, Dr. Leslie Issa Adam-Zakariah, expressed deep pride in the hospital’s progress and reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to quality healthcare, innovation and compassionate service. He highlighted persistent pressure on the facility, noting a bed occupancy rate consistently above 95 percent despite staffing limitations.

He appealed to government, corporate organisations, philanthropists and the general public to support the hospital in key areas such as staff accommodation, completion of the Phase II project and equipment upgrades. He mentioned several innovations introduced by the hospital, including the Central Emergency Concept, the Functional Bed Utilisation System, the Greater Accra WhatsApp referral platform and the establishment of a Feto-Maternal Unit.

Recognition of Leadership and Collaboration

Speaking on behalf of the Regional Minister, the Regional Director for Budget, Bless Kwame Dzake, commended management and staff for creating a platform that not only promotes transparency but also reflects the progress being made in healthcare delivery in the region. He underscored the importance of collaboration in building a resilient health system that places people at its centre. He further highlighted the hospital’s leadership in tertiary healthcare, emergency response and specialised services.

The Adabraka Mantse, Nii Tetteh Adjabeng II, who chaired the event, praised the hospital for prioritising community education and increasing public awareness of the services available. He encouraged management and staff to maintain their unity of purpose and continue the high standards of service that the hospital has come to be known for.
