COVID19 Outbreak at University of Ghana: 107 Confirmed Cases, No Hospitalisations

The Minister of Health, Mr. Mintah Akando has confirmed a localized COVID19 outbreak at the University of Ghana, with 107 cases reported as of July 1, 2025 and an additional 316 suspected cases currently under investigation.
At a press briefing, the Minister informed that the outbreak has been traced to an Omicron subvariant and remains confined to the university community. Importantly, no hospitalisations or deaths have been recorded so far.
The rise in cases on campus follows recent Hall Week celebrations, where large gatherings and poor adherence to COVID19 safety protocols contributed to the spread. Contact tracing has revealed gaps in preventive behavior, prompting swift government response. Measures include increased testing and campuswide awareness efforts.
The Minister also noted that the outbreak coincides with a seasonal increase in flu infections. The flu presents symptoms similar to COVID19, such as fever, cough, and sore throat, making early testing essential. He urged the public to seek prompt medical attention if symptoms appear.
“We are seeing more flu cases during the rainy season, and the symptoms can mimic COVID19,” he said.
Although routine COVID19 vaccinations have stopped, Ghana’s health system remains prepared. Treatments like Paxlovid are available for high-risk individuals, and hospitals are ready to manage severe cases if necessary.
“Our integrated surveillance system enabled early detection,” the Minister emphasized, assuring the public that the situation is under control and that health authorities remain prepared to manage both the COVID19 and seasonal flu cases effectively.
