Ashanti health directorate steps up Mpox measures as cases rise

The Ashanti Regional Health Directorate has indicated that it is intensifying efforts to prevent deaths and curb a further rise in MPox cases, following the 24 infections recorded so far.

Speaking at the 2025 Mid-Year Performance Review Meeting in Kumasi on Friday, August 22, 2025, the Regional Health Director, Dr. Fred Adomako-Boateng, revealed that the cases, spread across 12 districts, are led by the Kumasi Metropolitan area with six cases—representing a quarter of the regional total.

He noted that health facilities have been adequately equipped to manage MPox cases and urged households and individuals to adopt strict precautionary measures to help contain the spread.

“With the cases of Mpox, the most important thing is universal precaution. I believe that most of us should be having our alcohol sanitizer tied to our belt. So that the moment you begin greeting people, you should use it.

“You remember during the Corona era, the cases of diarrhoea gradually went down. It was a result of this standard precaution. So, if we can start picking them, it will help us,” he said.

The mid-year meeting was held under the theme: “Strengthening Primary Health Care through Networks of Practice (NOP) towards Universal Health Coverage (UHC): The Role of Stakeholders.”
